Diving at the Northern Tip of SumatraPulau Weh is located at the northernmost tip of Sumatra and is one of Indonesia’s lesser-known diving destinations. The small volcanic island lies at the entrance to the Andaman Sea and offers pristine reefs, healthy coral gardens and an impressive diversity of marine life.
The waters around Pulau Weh are known for their excellent visibility, sometimes strong currents and large schools of fish. Schools of barracuda, trevallies and reef sharks are regularly encountered, while macro enthusiasts will also find plenty of fascinating subjects. The dive sites offer a varied mix of walls, coral gardens and drift dives, often featuring spectacular underwater landscapes and colorful reefs. Pulau Weh has largely remained untouched by mass tourism and offers a relaxed island atmosphere combined with excellent diving.
The Journey
The journey begins on Pulau Weh, a small volcanic island at the northern tip of Sumatra in Indonesia.
Pulau Weh can be reached via Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province. International travelers usually fly to Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, from where domestic flights connect to Banda Aceh.
From Banda Aceh, a ferry ride of about 45 minutes brings visitors to Pulau Weh. After arrival on the island, a short transfer leads to the Pulau Weh Resort, located in a quiet bay surrounded by tropical rainforest.
Diving is organized directly through the resort’s dive center, which offers daily boat trips to the best dive sites around the island.
